When Motorola introduced the Moto G back in November, it said the low-cost smartphone would make its way to U.S. carriers by early 2014. An unlocked GSM version of the phone is already available, and it looks like you’ll soon be able to pick up a CDMA model as well. The Los Angeles Times has confirmed that a Verizon Wireless model of the Moto G is becoming available at Best Buy stores for $99.99 without a contract.
“The phone is currently landing in stores and is available for sale as soon as it arrives,” Best Buy spokesman Jonathan Sandler told The Times.
The Moto G first went on sale in the U.S. last month directly from Motorola. An 8GB model costs $179, while a 16GB model is available for $199. So a $99.99 phone (likely for the 8GB model) from Best Buy is a great price, especially without a contract, though you’ll only be able to use that phone on Verizon. The unlocked GSM models can be used on carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile.
The phone is not listed for sale on Best Buy’s website, and it appears that it has not yet landed at all Best Buy retail locations. So you might want to call your local store before heading over, though the phone should be available for sale once it arrives.
With a 4.5-inch, 720p display and a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, the Moto G is a good option for budget-minded smartphone buyers. Just keep in mind that all versions of the phone are 3G-only, so you won’t be able to tap into 4G LTE, no matter which model you choose. In Verizon’s case, that 3G signal is EV-DO, which generally tops out at a paltry 1.5 Mbps, or roughly 10 times slower than its LTE network speeds.
